Sycamore School hosted the Central Indiana Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition on Friday, February 17. MATHCOUNTS is the most popular nationwide middle school math competition and the Chapter is the first of three levels. Students and teams performing well at the Chapter Competition are invited to participate in the State MATHCOUNTS Competition which will be held at Purdue University on March 12th.

As a team, Sycamore had a great day. Of the 193 competitors, all 10 Sycamore students finished in the top 60 individually, the final state cut-offs have not been announced, but at least 7 of the students will continue on to the state competition.

Sycamore’s top individuals were:

3rd – Nicky Ivan
5th – Noah Tan
6th – Rhea Acharya
7th – Jeremy Smart
13th – Shaan Mishra
23rd – Spence Durham
33rd – Evan Piper

Each team designates 4 students from their school for the team competition. Sycamore’s team consisted of Nicky Ivan, Noah Tan, Rhea Acharya, and Shaan Mishra. The team finished 1st place overall, which is the 15th time Sycamore has won the Central Indiana Chapter Competition. The four team members will now compete together at the State MATHCOUNTS Competition and will hope to defend Sycamore’s team championship from last year. Sycamore has won 6 of the last 7 State MATHCOUNTS Competitions.

The final team standings were:

1st – Sycamore School
2nd – Clay Middle School
3rd – Riverside Junior High
4th – Carmel Middle School
5th – Creekside Middle School

The top 16 competitors are invited to participate in the Countdown Round which is a fast-paced buzzer competition during the awards ceremony. Shaan, Nicky, Rhea, Noah, and Jeremy all competed with Rhea and Noah making it all the way to the final match against each other. It was a very close match with Noah narrowly edging out Rhea to become the Countdown Round Champion.

Sycamore’s team is coached by Trent Tormoehlen and Bob Fischer.
