Acharya, Tan earn spots on Indiana MATHCOUNTS team going to nationals

Sycamore students had a very strong showing at Purdue University on Saturday, March 11) in the 2017 State MATHCOUNTS contest.

Sycamore was led by Rhea Acharya who finished second place and Noah Tan who finished fourth. These placings earned Rhea and Noah a spot on the team that will represent Indiana at the National MATHHCOUNTS Competition in Orlando, Florida on May 14th.

Additionally, Rhea and Noah each earned $8,000 scholarships to Purdue University and Rhea earned a $5,000 scholarship to Rose Hulman as the top female competitor.

All eight Sycamore students finished in the top 30% of the 195 competitors with Shaan Mishra placing 18th, Jeremy Smart, 21st, Spencer Durham 27th, Vishnu Iyer, 28th, Nicky Ivan 29th, and Evan Piper 56th.

West Lafayette was the state team champion and their coach, Pam Porterfield, will be coach of the national team. Rhea and Noah will be joined by 1st place finisher Jack Liu from Carmel Middle School and 3rd place finished Lilian He from Creekside when they compete in Orlando.

Sycamore coaches Trent Tormoehlen and Bob Fischer will travel with the team as assistant coaches.
