The Sycamore math team has competed in 4 rounds of the High School Math League. Of the 75 schools in Indiana competing in the contest, Sycamore is the only middle school. After Round 4, Sycamore is in 7th place in the state, ahead of local schools such as Zionsville HS, Westfield HS, North Central HS, HSE, University High School, and Cathedral.
Over 1000 students compete in the contest in Indiana. Sycamore student highlights include Vishu Iyer in 10th place overall, Steven Sun in 12th place, Tanay Acharya and Miguel Spalding-Price are tied for 22nd, and Akshay Guttikonda in 37th place. As a 6th grader, Akshay is competing with students who are 6 years older than him.
In November, Sycamore students competed in the annual AMC 8 math competition. Over 100,000 middle school students across the country compete in the contest. Several Sycamore students were named to the Distinguished Honor Roll which represents the top 1% of all students competing. Earning those honors were Miguel Spalding-Price, Vishnu Iyer, Grace Yang, Steven Sun, and Jeremy Smart. Students named to the Honor Roll, the top 2.5% of all students competing, were Karolena Zhou, Triston English, Lauren Caldwell, Christopher Xu, Nikita Mukhin, and Karl Wang.
Sycamore’s math team is competing this weekend at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire in the annual EMCC math competition. The EMCC includes many of the top math teams from the New England area, but also includes teams like Sycamore that travel from across the country, and usually multiple international teams that travel from as far away as China.
