We are all dealing with the unusual and far-reaching challenges of the presence of coronavirus, or COVID-19. At Sycamore, we have been paying close attention to the situation and planning for possible consequences. After digesting all we know about COVID-19, we have decided to close Sycamore for students beginning after Quest on March 13 until the beginning of school on April 13.
School clubs, competitions, and athletics will be cancelled during the closure. That means closing for two weeks of school before Spring Break and then our regular two-week closure for Spring Break. There will be no Quest Camp over Spring Break. We have arrived at this difficult decision with much contemplation and deliberation. Wednesday the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic. We know that in its initial stages, cases of COVID-19 increase exponentially.
Currently we are seeing the levels of spread and severity increase in Indiana and in Indianapolis. This disease is much more deadly than the flu. The most effective measure against the coronavirus seems to be extreme social distancing. While we currently have no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Sycamore community, we know that having one is probable because of many community connections.
