Music
EARLY CHILDHOOD
Our youngest students learn to enjoy music while experimenting with their own voices. Orff instruments and creative movement are included in the program.
LOWER SCHOOL
Lower School students receive music instruction twice weekly. In 1st and 2nd grade, principles and elements of music are taught through song and movement. Basic music theory is introduced at this level. Students in First and Second Grade also explore music elements through the study of percussion. Third Grade students build upon the same knowledge through the study of recorder and ukulele. Students in Fourth Grade complete their studies of basic music elements and theory through the study of a brass or woodwind instrument.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
The goal of the music program at the Middle School level is to instill a love and appreciation of music through performance, guided listening, attending concerts, watching performances, and exploration. Students enroll in Band and/or Choir each year of Middle School. Band students may choose from brass, woodwind, or percussion instruments. All musicians will perform at a winter concert, spring concert, ISSMA (optional solo and ensemble competitions as well), and at Sycamore's 8th grade graduation. Choir instruction includes singing with proper technique, breathing, vowel sounds, articulation, singing in foreign languages, solfége, sight reading, rhythms, melodies, and singing in unison and multiple parts. Students will have several performances each year, including a winter and spring concert. Music History is also taught in 5th grade (history of music notation) and in 6th grade (history of pop music and musical theater).
